Client Services
When I meet a new client, I begin by developing an understanding of what’s causing or contributing to each client’s distress and difficulties, what options exist for treatment, and who might provide the best available treatment.
My typical practice is to conduct an evaluation that will span 2-4 sessions. At the end of the evaluation, I will be able to offer you my impressions of what would be most helpful to you and whether or not I can provide that treatment. It’s very important that you evaluate this information in light of your own sense of what you’re struggling with, how comfortable you feel during our sessions together, and how much you agree with what I’m suggesting for your treatment. This will inform our discussion of a treatment plan. We may choose to proceed to work together. I may suggest other resources that can work in tandem with our work. If we conclude that you need other treatment services, I will help you find treatment providers that will be a better fit with your needs.
In my work with clients I draw from a wide range of therapeutic approaches. These include developmental, psychodynamic, interpersonal, family systems, and neurobehavioral approaches to treatment. I also keep up with the scientific research on the effectiveness of various psychotherapeutic treatment methods enabling me to guide clients to treatment approaches and practitioners that represent scientifically supported methods.
Frequency and duration of sessions are best determined through a discussion of treatment goals, levels of distress, scheduling, and costs. I typically meet with clients once or twice weekly for 50 minute sessions. Some clients, however, prefer longer sessions or a more variable schedule. It is also not uncommon for a client to start therapy with a more intensive schedule and to modify it over time as he or she is feeling or functioning better.
